Governor of West Bengal C.V. Ananda Bose to grace the ninth edition of the Journalism Awards honouring excellence in Journalism
News Editor, Takmaa News, Kolkata, 18th Aug 2023 : The Journalism Awards Committee, in association with Candid Communication, is set to host the ninth edition of the “Journalism Awards” on Thursday, 24th August, 2023, at hotel Taj Bengal. These awards aim to honour the exceptional contributions made by journalists who have significantly impacted the field of journalism. These awards acknowledge excellence in reporting, investigative journalism, opinion writing, feature writing, and photography, among other areas. The distinguished chief guest for this occasion will be His Excellency, Shri C.V. Ananda Bose, Governor of West Bengal. Mr. Manash Ghosh, a veteran journalist from The Statesman who made a significant breakthrough during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, will be conferred with the prestigious Sumit Sen Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award.
Since its inception in 2009, the Journalism Awards have risen to become a premier award ceremony in Eastern India, dedicated to celebrating journalistic excellence. It has established itself as a respected entity and gained popularity within the media community across West Bengal as it highlights and acknowledges their noteworthy contributions to the field.
This year’s Journalism Awards Committee includes esteemed journalists such as Mr. Chittaranjan Biswas, a veteran Sports Journalist from Anandabazar Patrika; Mr. Abhijit Dasgupta, former Director of Doordarshan; Mr. Buroshiva Dasgupta, former Resident Editor of The Financial Express, Mr. Subrata Nag Choudhury, former Resident Editor of the Indian Express, Saloo Choudhury, eminent Writer and Professor and Prasant Panjiar, former Photojournalist and Editor of Patriot Newspaper, India Today and the Outlook Group of Publications. Beyond the recognition of journalists’ achievements, the committee also holds a commitment to acknowledging the efforts of unsung heroes within society. Looking ahead, the committee intends to expand its efforts into social initiatives aimed at assisting financially disadvantaged and marginalized journalists.
This year the Journalism Awards comprise of a total of 15 award categories, encompassing District Reporting, Electronic Media – Reporting, General News (in Bengali, English, Hindi and Urdu), Feature (in Bengali, English, Hindi and Urdu), Lifestyle & Cinema (in Bengali), Print Media Photography-Lifestyle, Print Media Photography-Sports, Print Media Photography-Feature, Print Media Photography-News, Sports (in Bengali) and Sumit Sen Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award. The overwhelming response from the district journalists has been remarkable over the years.
Since its inception, the Journalism Awards have attracted distinguished figures from various domains to its ceremonies. Notable attendees have included former Union Information & Broadcast Minister, late Priyaranjan Dasmunshi; former Kolkata Mayor, Shri Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya; renowned actor, late Soumitra Chatterjee; sports icon, Ravi Shastri; former Tripura Governor, Shri Tathagata Roy; and others. The eighth edition of the awards featured the esteemed presence of Former President of India, late Pranab Mukherjee. The event has also welcomed judges from the realms of business, industry, performing arts, sports, and administration, such as late Russi Modi, Raghu Rai, late Ramaprasad Goenka, Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay, and others. Over the past eight editions, the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award has been bestowed upon legendary journalists including late Moti Nandi, late Nihaal Singh, late Amitava Chowdhury, late Uday Banerjee, and late Sukharanjan Sengupta, among others. In 2019, renowned journalist Manojit Mitra received the inaugural Sumit Sen Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award from the former President of India, late Pranab Mukherjee.
