Bureau of Indian Standard, Eastern Regional Lab celebrates 77th Foundation Day
Ambar Bhattacharya, Takmaa News, Kolkata, 7th Jan 2024 : The Eastern Regional Lab of Bureau of Indian Standards (the National Standards Body), organized a meeting on “Quality- Future Trends in Testing” at Royal Bengal Room, City Centre 1, Salt Lake, Kolkata on Saturday (January 6, 2024).
The meeting a first of its kind was being organized to discuss various aspects related to testing methodologies specified in Indian Standards, was inaugurated by Sh Subhadip Basu, Senior Director & Head, Eastern Regional Lab, BIS.
He highlighted how BIS has been constantly upgrading the Indian Standards with incorporation of newer, faster techniques related to Testing Methodologies of products. Smt. Nishat Sultana Haque, Deputy Director General (Labs), BIS in her address as Guest of Honour highlighted how various Quality Control Orders issued by various Ministries were being implemented by BIS to safeguard the interest of the country and the citizens of India and the need of the hour was faster, reliable, accurate methods for faster implementation of such QCOs.
The meeting was also attended by senior officials from National Food Laboratory (NFL), National Test House (NTH), National Institute of Cholera & Enteric Diseases (NICED), Export Inspection Council (EIC), Indian Jute Industries Research Association (IJIRA), IOCL, EFRAC, etc and also representatives from various Industries like Varun Beverages.
The representatives deliberated upon how various Instrument based techniques and faster techniques which are being used by the leading R&D institutes of this country or other labs & manufacturers can be introduced as part of methods specified in Indian Standards so that both Industry can get their products tested in minimum possible time as well as consumer grievances can be resolved in shorter time. It was felt that reliable, accurate and faster methods were need of the hour especially for ease of doing business and early resolution of disputes.
The members attending the meeting also appreciated the collaborative efforts between BIS, R&D Institutes, leading laboratories of various Regulatory bodies, Industries, technologists and consumers in improving the Indian Standards in a pace never seen in the past and this is helping BIS in redefining the quality movement of this country.
It was also informed that many Standard Clubs have been formed in schools across West Bengal & also Internship programs in Laboratory has been started in BIS Lab for students of this country with focus in inculcating the importance of quality at a very young age in the minds of the future citizens of this country.
