IIMC Alumni Meet in Kolkata: The Role of AI in Mass Communication Explored

Ambar Bhattacharya, Takmaa News, Kolkata, 22nd Apr 2025 :  The Indian Institute of Mass Communication Alumni Association (IIMCAA) hosted its 13th annual alumni reunion, Connections, for the West Bengal Chapter at the Press Club, Kolkata, on Sunday.

The event was presided over by West Bengal Chapter President Subhro Niyogi and attended by alumni from diverse sectors. Distinguished patrons of the chapter, Ashoke Bhattacharya and Asis Chakrabarty, along with former IIMCAA President Prasad Sanyal, addressed the gathering. The highlight of the evening was the felicitation of Anupam Rana, a Silver Jubilee Batch (1999-2000) alumnus.

The reunion served as a dynamic platform to strengthen IIMCAA’s mission of fostering an inclusive and vibrant alumni network. Attendees engaged in insightful discussions, with a key focus on the role of artificial intelligence in the evolving landscape of mass communication. AI was lauded for simplifying tasks such as transcription, audio & video editing, and adapting news stories to match media house-specific styles. Yet, the consensus remained that media professionals are integral to the industry, with reporters continuing to seek impactful stories and public relations professionals crafting communication strategies aligned with market needs.

The event also featured addresses from IIMCAA officials, including Chapter Treasurer Amreen Izhar, Pramod Kumar, Abhirup Basu, Soumika Das, Rashi Bisaria, IIMCAA Treasurer Animesh Biswas, and Ranjan Sen from the Bangladesh Chapter, among others.
