On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, Disappearing Dialogues Collective organises awareness walk at East Kolkata Wetlands
News Editor, Takmaa News, Kolkata, 2nd Feb 2024 : On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, Disappearing Dialogues Collective (dD) today organised an awareness walk for preservation of East Kolkata Wetlands and care for the environment. Students from eleven schools of Kolkata and suburbs, members from various environmental organizations participated in the awareness drive.
Walk for the Wetlands was flagged off by Shri Debashis Sen, Past Chairman and Managing Director HIDCO and Ms. Elizabeth Lee, Director of the American Center Kolkata and the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) of the US Consulate General , Kolkata.
The walk started around Bamanghata Bridge, triggering minds to care for the huge biodiversity, sustainable practices and to preserve the wetland ecosystem with participation from students of the city and community schools, multiple stakeholders, and enthusiastic people at large. It was a collective initiative to walk together for the conservation of the wetlands and our future well-being.
Students from Calcutta International School, The Heritage School, Mahavir Institute of Education and Research, Ektara, Bamanghata High School, Kheadaha High School, Chowbaga High School, Narayanpur High School, Bhojerhat Saroda Deshapriya Balika Vidyalaya partook in the walk. Honoured guests from the German Consulate General Kolkata, Max Mueller Bhavan and U.S. Consulate General Kolkata also joined in the walk in this awareness initiative.
Speaking on the occasion Shri Debashis Sen, said, “Today owing to large scale urbanization across cities, we are witnessing a very fast disappearing of wetlands. This has a very negative impact on the environment and we are already facing the effects. For a balanced environment existence of wetlands is of high importance. East Kolkata Wetlands is the life-line for Kolkata and we need to protect these wetlands for us and future generations. I congratulate the organizers and all the participating members for upholding this noble cause.”
Ms Nobina Gupta, Founder Director of Disappearing Dialogues Collective reiterated, “Walk for the Wetlands is a youth – led initiative to recognise the importance of East Kolkata Wetlands and its ecosystem. We must stride unitedly toward a shared commitment to conserve and celebrate Kolkata’s natural heritage”
Disappearing Dialogues Collective (dD) has been celebrating JolaBhumiUtsav, for the past seven years with a focus to raise environmental awareness and proactive behaviour among the local youth and all citizens in East Kolkata Wetlands conservation. Upholding the rich biodiversity and sustainable practices of East Kolkata Wetlands, dD acknowledges the symbiotic relationship between Kolkata and the wetlands intervening creatively with all stakeholders to address pressing environmental issues.
