News Correspondent, abptakmaa, Kolkata, 9th May 2020 : This is a story which will definitely bring cheer amidst the Covid gloom. An elderly gentleman suffering from an oral cancer with a history of gall bladder cancer, coronary bypass surgery and high blood sugar, beat coronavirus with sheer willpower and efforts of doctors and staff at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals Kolkata. On April 20, the 68-year-old cancer patient hailing from Silchar was visiting the Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals OPD for consultation regarding the treatment of a cancerous tumour in his mouth when he was found having slight fever.
He was immediately admitted to the Covid Observation Ward, especially set up by Apollo Gleneagles to admit patients who are suspected to have Covid, and are awaiting results of Covid tests. Unfortunately, the next day, Covid test results came out as positive, after which he was shifted to the Covid Isolation Ward. After being treated for the coronavirus for two weeks, the tests came out negative twice on May 4 and May 5. He was discharged on May 6 and is doing fine. He has been advised to be in quarantine for 14 days, after which he shall resume his cancer treatment.
Mr. Rana Dasgupta, CEO, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals said, “This is a very positive chapter in the fight against coronavirus. Some of the steps that we have taken have helped, for instance our COVID critical care section is housed within the COVID-19 unit, which does away with the need of transferring patients; our dedicated set of staff use PPE suits, which helps prevent spread of infection.”
Mr. Joy Basu, VP (Administration), Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals said, “We are extremely happy that with the efforts of our entire team at Apollo, we were able to cure a patient of coronavirus who had very low immunity due to cancer and was most vulnerable to the infection.”
