Herlihy Cup, a historic football tournament of India
Ambar Bhattacharya, Takmaa News, Kolkata, 9th Aug 2024 : The Herlihy Cup, a prestigious and historic tournament, traces its origins back to 1917. This beautifully engraved and elegant trophy was donated by a British man named Jack O’Mahogany in memory of his aunt, Mrs. Herlihy, who passed away in Darjeeling. Made of pure silver, the Herlihy Cup stands twenty-six inches tall and weighs approximately 3.4 kilograms, embodying both a rich history and an impressive physical presence.
The Herlihy Cup has long been a symbol of sporting excellence, attracting strong teams from various regions. To ensure a competitive and fair tournament, the strongest teams are strategically placed in the quarter-finals through a seeding system. This practice is similar to other prestigious tournaments, where higher-ranked teams are given a spot in the next round. This system has been a standard feature of the Herlihy Cup, maintaining the integrity and excitement of the competition.
This year’s tournament promises to be as thrilling as ever. The competition kicks off on the 3rd of August and culminates in a grand finale on the 15th of August. Over these two weeks, teams will battle it out on the field, showcasing their skills and vying for the honor of lifting the Herlihy Cup.
