Manipal Hospitals, Salt Lake, Kolkata, successfully conducts 7-hour surgery on ovarian tumor

News Editor, Takmaa News, Kolkata, 28th July 2022 : Manipal Hospitals, Salt Lake, Kolkata has set yet another benchmark in patient care by conducting a critical surgery on a lady with Ovarian Tumour (Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma). An expert team of 14 medical professionals led by Dr. Manas Chakrabarti, Consultant Gynae-Oncologist & Dr. Sandip Chakraborty, Consultant General Surgeon, Manipal Hospitals successfully operated and removed a tumour of 45.72 cm diameter and about 19 kg weight.

Mrs Reema Dey (51) (name changed), resident of Kolkata, was brought to Manipal Hospitals with an abnormal abdominal swelling. Mrs. Dey’s initial thought was to reduce her weight for which she had undergone treatment. She was totally unaware of the tumour in her abdomen, or its critical condition. When she reached Manipal Hospitals, she had difficulty in walking, her lungs felt constricted. Doctors at the hospital advised a thorough check-up, following which it was found that the tumour had grown to an abnormal size. Mrs. Dey also had a history of multiple ovarian cyst surgeries. Bowel problems are common among people with cysts and tumours, and Mrs. Dey was no different. Therefore, noting all the prevailing conditions, the doctors formed a medical board for further scrutiny before surgery. Every detail was discussed including a special angle on which she should lie down during the surgery to prevent quashing of the blood vessels.

The positioning of the patient during surgery was crucial owing to the huge mass, and lying directly on the bed could have created problems in operating. The doctors curated an angle of 15-20 degrees wedge in a tilted position to keep the blood supply from the heart active.  Blood supply from the heart was vital, for, as soon as it was stopped, the patient’s BP started dropping drastically. However, the expert team of technicians and anaesthetics took prompt steps to overcome this situation. The tumour was removed successfully in a surgery that lasted for 7 hours. Post-surgery, she was prescribed a special supervised diet that helped her recover fast.

Dr. Manas Chakrabarti, Consultant Gynae-Oncologist, said, “It was a multi-disciplinary surgery and our team of 14 medical specialists was aware of all the complications. So, we had to modify the plan several times. Mrs. Dey was asked to perform some breathing exercises and also provided protein diet to overcome post recovery challenges. The sheer weight of the tumour had caused walking problems that worsened her condition. Also, the multiple cyst surgeries she underwent in the past had to be kept in mind. We did the planning and conducted the surgery and removed the tumour. Our planning for 3 days prior to the surgery really paid off well and it was a success.”

Mrs. Reema Dey has been discharged, and is doing well now. Her stitches have been removed and her family members are happy to see her healthy and doing well.
