The Royal Calcutta Golf Club helds the first edition of Consular Bowls from 11th to 13th March 2022
The Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) will organize the first edition of the CONSULAR BOWLS 2022 from 11th to 13th March, 2022. Participation is open to the Kolkata Consular Corps and RCGC members respectively and will introduce them to the game of Lawn Bowling. Consul- Generals/Deputy High Commissioners and Honorary Consuls will have their teams competing for the CONSULAR BOWLS trophy.
RCGCs Maidan Tent will serve as the venue for this prestigious event that stands in the tradition of tournaments played here for the last 130 years, being India’s only natural Bowling Green.
As good corporate citizens, RCGC and the Consular Corps will use the occasion to play a sustainable tournament and to contribute to a better environment. In partnership with Y-East.org, the games will be interrupted on Sunday for players to participate in a campaign just outside the Tent area.
When speaking to the media, RCGC Captain – Rohan Ghosh said, We welcome all the Consulates Corps to be a part of this tournament and hope to continue this endeavor for long and make it a tradition to be followed for years to come.
Germanys Consul-General – Manfred Auster said, I welcome this outreach of RCGC to the Consular Corps in Kolkata. I already played a few rounds on the historic ground at the RCGC Tent. Its location in the midst of the Maidan gave us the idea to involve all participants in an active campaign of nurturing and preserving the environment in this iconic space of Kolkata.
Background: Lawn Bowls is widely played in most of the Commonwealth countries. RCGC is the mecca of Lawn Bowling in India. Several prestigious tournaments have been played here since the last 130 years. This tournament is being organized to bring all the Consulates and local Business community on a platform to forge friendship & business opportunities together with an introduction to the game of Lawn Bowls.
In preparation to the actual tournament, regular Bowlers at RCGC will be assisting the participants to learn the nuances of the game within no time.
It’s a fun event to be played in a Triples Mixed Team format consisting of two players from the Consulate and one RCGC Member, steered by a RCGC Bowler playing together till the League stage. Post the league stage the Bowling member will also join the team for the knockouts till the FINALS.
As Lawn Bowls is played outdoors on natural grass, there is a clear connection to the environment; hence it appears natural to combine it with a dedicated outreach campaign. On the day of the Finals, the game will be interrupted for an hour-long event outside the RCGC Tent. Players and friends will conduct a cleanliness awareness campaign, install trash-bins and plant trees. RCGC has committed to care for growth of the planted saplings, while a partner organisation will empty the trash bins on a regular basis. These measures are nanced by the proceeds of the tournament and through individual and corporate sponsors.
