Narayana Health introduces ‘Post Basic Diploma in Oncology Nursing’ course

News Correspondent, abptakmaa, Kolkata, 25th Jan 2020 : Nursing is one of the most important pillars of patient care in Hospitals. To bring specialized education in oncology, Westbank School of Nursing, Howrah, a unit of Narayana Health has started ‘Post Basic Diploma in Oncology Nursing’ (PBDON) course, recognized by Indian Nursing Council and West Bengal Nursing Council for the first time in eastern India.

Post Basic Diploma in Oncology Nursing (PBDON) is intended to fulfill the ever-increasing demand of trained oncology nurses in National and International cancer centres, hospitals, nursing colleges, research institutes and community hospitals, both in government and private sectors. The course is meant for qualified nurses (GNM/B.Sc Nursing) for one academic year. The aim of the course is to upgrade the knowledge and skills of trained nurses to create a cadre of specially trained Oncology Nurses who will be capable of handling and maintaining venous access devices like PICC, Central lines, ports, chemotherapy drug administration, brachytherapy, minor surgical procedures, manage the common symptoms and care of the critically and terminally ill cancer patients.

The allocated number for the training program is 20 students for the academic year January 2020 to December 2020 who will be facilitated with comprehensive cancer care training with classroom, nursing lab, nutrition lab, computer lab, well stocked library with latest editions of books, nursing journals and internet facility along with latest Audiovisual Teaching aids.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Vivek Agarwal, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Haemato Oncologist, Narayana Health Howrah said, “As with all nursing careers, the demand for oncology nurses is expected to increase significantly over the next few years. This is especially because recently we have seen a significant increase in cancer patients throughout the country. Specialized courses like this will help healthcare service providers to have trained specialized patient care providers, which is the backbone of any cancer institute”.
