Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah Introduces PET CT Scan Facility

Ambar Bhattacharya, abptakmaa, Kolkata, 18th July 2019 :  Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah specializes in conducting and enabling novel and systematic research aimed at driving healthcare in a positive direction, with dedicated facilities and teams to support clinical research and advanced facility. Narayana Health is launching a new advanced PET CT Scan facility for Cancer care. Positron emission tomography (PET) uses small amounts of radioactive materials called radiotracers, a special camera and a computer to help evaluate your organ and tissue functions. By identifying body changes at the cellular level, PET may detect the early onset of disease before it is evident on other imaging tests. A PET scan measures important body functions, such as blood flow, oxygen use, and sugar (glucose), metabolism, to help doctors evaluate how well organs and tissues are functioning.

PET CT Scan is commonly performed to detect Cancer, determine blood flow to the heart muscle, determine the effects of a heart attack, or myocardial infarction, on areas of the heart, and evaluates brain abnormalities, such as tumors, memory disorders, seizures and other central nervous system disorders.

PET scans are performed on instruments that are combined PET and CT scanners. The combined PET/CT scans provide images that pinpoint the anatomic location of abnormal metabolic activity within the body. The combined scans have been shown to provide more accurate diagnoses than the two scans performed separately. Doctors can make more accurate diagnoses, develop more targeted treatment monitoring, which should result in improved patient outcomes. PET CT Scan has few advantages such as it identifies changes in body, at the cellular level, PET imaging may detect the early onset of disease before it is evident on other imaging tests such as CT or MRI. Also a nuclear medicine scan is less expensive and may yield more precise information than exploratory surgery. One risk is radiation exposure. The radiation exposure from a PETCT scan is similar to a total-body CT scan done with a contrast medium. A CT scan of a limited area of the body or one done without a contrast medium exposes patients to less radiation.

Speaking about the new facility, Dr. Subhasis Bhattacharya Facility Director, NH Howrah said, “Building on the vision of creating significant impact on the cancer care landscape in this part of the world, today’s pioneering development will build further momentum in the battle against cancer and other deadly diseases. Now patients from the state have access to good infrastructure at Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah
